The freak show is dead. Long live the freak show!

Article Abstract:

It was very strange to see the skeleton of Sara Baartman appearing to look at a plaster mould of her body in the Musee de l'Homme in Paris, France, according to filmmaker Zola Maseko. His documentary 'The Life and Times of Sara Baartman,' presents her story. She was brought to the UK from South Africa in 1810, and people paid to see her because she had the very enlarged rump common in the Khoi people. She was later sold to an animal trainer in France and died in 1815. Maseko feels that the research he undertook for this documentary has affected his own sense of identity as a black South African.

A farewell to arms?

Article Abstract:

Filmmaker Sam Raimi emphasizes that he remains very committed to horror, and states that he would be very interested in directing 'The Evil Dead 4.' However, his latest film, 'A Simple Plan,' based on a novel by Scott B. Smith, is more of a moral thriller than a horror film. He feels that he had to battle against an urge to make the action in this film more visually dramatic. He also found it difficult to allow the actors to tell the story.

The knight of the long knives

Article Abstract:

It is hard to believe that 'Blood Feast' was taken seriously, according to Herschell Gordon Lewis, who was very influential in filmmaking in the 1960s. He recalls that he did not really regard himself as a director, as he just wanted to encourage people into cinemas.
