The girlie who couldn't shock'n'roll

Article Abstract:

Channel 4's 'The Girlie Show' has proved quite popular, even though it seems to be rather pointless and superficial, according to Claire Gorham, who presented the first series of the show but has been replaced for the second series. She feels that she was never really the right person to present a show of this kind, but is not bitter about having been replaced. She is still on good terms with her former colleagues, and is grateful that presenting the show allowed her to make a break into television work.

Naughty but nice

Article Abstract:

Female comedians find that audiences are easier to handle as they get older, according to Jenny Eclair. She feels that now, at the age of 37, she is no longer a threat to the female members of her audiences, and that men feel more comfortable with her too. Her stage act is particularly popular with women, who welcome the fact that she talks openly and humorously about sensitive aspects of women's lives. She is shortly to appear as Georgina Hale in Nell Dunn's 'Steaming.'

Supporters' club

Article Abstract:

Football has traditionally been seen in the UK as a sport which attracts almost exclusively lower-class people. However, this is no longer the case. It has now become fashionable to be a football fan, and many middle-class people follow football very closely. There are attracted to football because they see it as having many different facets, and they also welcome it as a safe topic of conversation. Even women are now starting to become genuinely interested in football.
