The great comprehensive debate: pass or fail?

Article Abstract:

There is no research which clearly indicates that comprehensive schools are either better or worse than the secondary modern and grammar schools which they replaced. However, many middle class parents in inner city areas feel that comprehensive education is not good enough for their children. The Labour party agrees, stating that comprehensive schools have failed. Supporters of comprehensive schools point out that over the last three decades the proportion of 16-year-olds obtaining at least five good grades has increased to almost half.

Why teachers at this ill-fated comprehensive will strike unless a tenth of their pupils are expelled

Article Abstract:

Staff at The Ridings School, a comprehensive school opened in Halifax, England, in 1994, are threatening to strike unless 60 pupils are excluded or disciplined. The headteacher has resigned, and the school's future is now uncertain. The school's experiences may serve as an example for people involved in making decisions about how to deal with disruptive pupils. However, it must be recognised that the school has been operating in a difficult area and that most of its 600 pupils have been very well behaved.

Pupils can expect to do better and better in exams, unless they are black. Why?

Article Abstract:

The examination performance of African-Caribbean boys is declining, while the achievements of most other ethnic groups are improving, according to a recent Ofsted report on the academic performance of ethnic-minority pupils. Teachers often have negative views about African-Caribbean boys, who tend to be livelier and talk more than boys from other cultures. In contrast, Asian boys are regarded as quiet and compliant.
