The new pavement artists

Article Abstract:

Collaboration between architects and artists is becoming increasingly common in the UK. In many cases, architects and artists work as partners in the creative process, rather than the artist merely providing a suitable piece for a new building. It is vital that a suitable match between architect and artist is obtained if a collaborative project is to be successful. It is important to be aware that collaboration requires a great deal of generosity and time.

The official style

Article Abstract:

An exhibition is currently being held at Somerset House, London, England, to mark the 200th anniversary of the death of architect Sir William Chambers. The Courtauld Gallery, where the exhibition has been set up, is reached by a magnificent staircase designed by Chambers himself. The exhibition reminds visitors that Chambers was one of the most successful architects of the 18th century. He was once accused of being dull, but this is clearly not the case.

A temple to the spirit of Rome

Article Abstract:

Both the Royal Academy of Arts and the Riba Heinz Gallery are currently exhibiting drawings by 18th century amateur architect Lord Burlington. He is one of the most influential architects the UK has ever known, and is most famous for his house at Chiswick, west London, which features ramparts, gates, a temple and an ampitheatre. He has strongly influenced the Modern Movement, and his house has become a shrine for young architects.
