The prize fighters

Article Abstract:

The awarding of the 1998 Nobel Peace prize to John Hume and Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble has prompted very different reactions within the nationalist and Unionist communities. There has been some celebration, especially among nationalists, but some Unionists have felt cautious and even suspicious. Some nationalists, especially republicans, feel that Gerry Adams should have received a share of the prize as well as, or instead of, Trimble. However, even these nationalists also believe that it is too soon to reward a peace process that still has a very long way to go.

World leaders 'were target of Irish bomb.'

Article Abstract:

Irish anti-terrorist police have intercepted a very large republican bomb at the port of Dun Laoighaire, Ireland. Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern believes that the bomb could have been destined for the Asian-Europe summit in London, England, which will be attended by 25 world leaders. The UK and Irish governments regard the bomb as an attempt to create chaos as the Northern Irish peace talks come close to their scheduled conclusion.

Mandelson has chance to relaunch Ulster peace process

Article Abstract:

There have been mixed reactions to Peter Mandelson's appointment as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. Unionists have welcomed his appointment, as they disliked Mo Mowlam, whom he replaces. However, nationalists regret Mowlam's departure, as they had established a good relationship with her. He will assume his responsibilities just as the Mitchell review of the Good Friday Agreement reaches its most important stages.
