The rainbow treatment

Article Abstract:

A trial programme undertaken at Leicester Royal Infirmary indicates that there are considerable benefits to be gained from taking new approaches to helping UK hospital trusts derive maximum advantage from human resources. The project has been headed by Dr Meredith Belbin, a management theorist who believes that hospitals and many other organisations are mistaken in using detailed job descriptions. He encouraged hospital staff to categorise their work according to various colours, and this has been found to encourage flexibility.

1,000 'ghostbusters' to hunt tax dodgers

Article Abstract:

The UK government's 1996 Budget contained measures aimed at reducing the incidence of tax evasion by large businesses and international corporations. Under the 'Spend to Save' programme, government departments will invest 800 million pounds sterling over the next three years in detecting tax evasion, and hope to recoup an estimated 6.7 billion pounds sterling as a result. This will involve employing an additional 1,000 people. There will also be efforts to reduce welfare fraud.

What to do when the goalposts move

Article Abstract:

The vast majority of managers are unconvinced about the advantages of flattening organisational structures, or 'delayering.' Recent research has found that junior managers in particular are opposed to delayering, indicating that reducing the number of levels can in fact create new communications problems within organisations. However, staff morale can in certain cases be boosted by increased autonomy and a larger workload.
