The symphonies of Sibelius: a players' guide

Article Abstract:

There were a number of significant moments associated with making a second recorded cycle of Sibelius symphonies, according to leading members of the London Symphony Orchestra. For principal trombonist Ian Bousfield, the Seventh Symphony, where there is a trombone solo which comes three times, is particularly important. For principal oboist Roy Carter, the music of Sibelius has many attractive features, but presents significant challenges. Principal timpanist Kurt-Hans Goedicke is very attracted to the slow movement of the First Symphony.

And here, with the latest news - sung to you in heroic couplets - is ... the opera composer

Article Abstract:

Using contemporary events in opera is completely valid, according to composer John Adams. He believes that opera is an excellent format for dealing with issues relating to worldwide political forces and opinions. His opera 'Nixon in China,' which was premiered in Oct 1987 by the Houston Grand Opera, is now to be performed for the first time in London, England. He also worked with poet Alice Goodman and director Peter Sellars on 'Klinghoffer,' which also deals with contemporary events.

Save the last waltz for us

Article Abstract:

There should not be a sharp distinction in opera between dance and the rest of the action, according to Ron Howell, who has advised on dance in a number of operatic productions. He likes to be involved in all aspects of the production, and pays great attention to how the principals move. Most recently, he has been involved in the Royal Opera's production of 'Merry Widow' at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London, England, working with director Graham Vick.
