United Kingdom Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Mandelson has gained a reputation for paying a great deal of attention to his image. He dresses in expensive clothes, and cultivates friendships with well-known people. He lives in a fashionable part of London, England, in a house where interior design work has been undertaken by fashionable architect Seth Stein. However, he also retains strong links with the traditional roots of the Labour party, and is willing to change his plans to attend party functions in unfashionable locations.

Article Abstract:

Welfare reform remains a very politically sensitive issue in the UK, with the Labour party facing extensive opposition in both the House of Lords and the House of Commons over cuts in disability-related benefits. Even if government ministers manage to limit the scale of the revolt in the House of Commons, it is still quite likely that the House of Lords will remain opposed to cuts in benefits. This could force the government to invoke the Parliament Act to ensure that the Bill goes through in 2000.
