The way you dress, the way you walk

Article Abstract:

There is still considerable debate in the UK about whether certain women make themselves vulnerable to being raped because of the way they dress and behave. Jill Saward, who was herself raped in 1986, believes that women who dress very provocatively can encourage men to make sexual advances and possibly even become violent. This view is not shared by groups which support rape victims. These groups feel that women should not be made responsible for how men behave and that they should not be given the impression that they can control rape by the way they dress and behave.

When life begins at 50

Article Abstract:

It is not necessarily true that women experience a decline in their quality of life after the menopause, as has been traditionally assumed. Indeed, many women find that their quality of life actually improves. They may be pleased to have lost their fertility, as this leaves them free of problems associated with menstruation, and may become more outgoing and relaxed. Research undertaken by the Royal College of Psychiatrists indicates that depression is less common in women who have gone through the menopause than in those who have not.

Council condemned in child abuse inquiry

Article Abstract:

The failure of Hackney council in London, England, to deal appropriately with allegations of sexual abuse against social worker Mark Trotter, who died of an Aids-related illness in 1995, was the result of incompetence, rather than political conspiracy, according to an independent inquiry. However, the inquiry has been very critical of the way in which the council undertook its internal investigation into this matter. Evidence of mismanagement and excessive trade union power has been identified.
