'Their death was like a knife in my guts.' (Jo New, who had to cope with the suicide of both her parents)(Interview)

Article Abstract:

There is a great deal of shame and guilt attached to suicide, and experiencing the suicide of a close relative can be very isolating, according to Jo New, who lost both her parents through suicide. She found it hard to talk to people about her feelings, and discovered that some people find it very hard to use the word 'suicide.' In the case of her mother, she tried to deny her feelings, but in the case of her father she made a great effort to face up to her pain.

This virus won't let you forget

Article Abstract:

The hepatitis C virus, identified in 1989, causes inflammation of the liver. It is spread by the exchange of blood and body fluids, mainly by drug-users sharing needles and contaminated blood transfusions. There is a long latent period before the symptoms appear. The main treatment is Interferon, which has side-effects of fever, lethargy and hair loss. Undiagnosed hepatitis often leads to cirrhosis or liver failure as it is discovered too late.

The rough guide to life and death

Article Abstract:

When someone is dying, it is not always possible to make peace with them, according to Deborah Bosley, whose first novel 'Let Me Count The Ways,' contains passages inspired by the death from Aids of her husband Brett. She felt rejected, and was unable to hide this from her husband. Her book emphasises that there is not always a solution to the most difficult situations, and that some things simply cannot be explained.
