There's still a future in publishing

Article Abstract:

Chris Anderson, owner of Future Publishing, has managed to launch new magazines at a time when the magazine publishing industry is in a decline. Starting with very little capital his company has launched nine new titles in 1991 and now runs 17 magazines in specialist areas such as computing, music, sports and needlecrafts. A shrewd marketing ploy has been to include free gifts, either on a regular basis, or as an initial incentive. The turnover for 1992 is hoped to be 30 million pounds sterling.

Overture to a classical confrontation

Article Abstract:

Michael Bukht, programme controller of Classic FM, which opens in September 1992 as Britain's first national commercial radio station, plans to attract those who buy classical music on CD. Research shows increasing demand for classical recordings and the popularity of opera with under-35s. Classic FM competes for its audience with Radios l,2 and 4 and Capital and Clyde independent stations. Broadcasting will include complex music from Mozart to Benjamin Britten, preferring shorter pieces.

Television stations are competing for viewers by trying to find the right formula for popular television entertainment as well as competing against other leisure activities. There is a fear that to attract audiences the ever popular game shows may become more explicit as has happened in the US. Television is competing for viewers against other leisure pursuits and video entertainment.
