They really were just friends

Article Abstract:

French composers Louis Durey, Germaine Tailleferre, Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger, Georges Auric and Francis Poulenc have been regarded as closely linked ever since they were designated as 'Les Six' by music writer Henri Collet in magazine articles in 1920. Under the direction of Jean Cocteau, these composers started to stage group events in music hall style, and in 1921 all except Durey collaborted on an anti-bourgeois ballet. The grouping together of these composers has served to perpetuate the reputation of several members who were not particularly talented.

He'd got plenty o' somethin.' (60th anniversary of death of composer George Gershwin)

Article Abstract:

Composer George Gershwin attracted mixed views both during his lifetime and after his death in 1937, at the age of only 38. Some observers believed that he was going beyond his abilities in attempting to compose concert and opera music, and his symphony-based music such as the Piano Concerto and 'An American in Paris' were the subject of considerable criticism. However, others, including Arnold Schoenberg, recognized that Gershwin's approaches to rhythm, melody and harmony were extremely influential.

Purcell's sons of art

Article Abstract:

Purcell has been seen as one of the greatest British composers ever since his death in 1695 at the age of only 36. At some stages since then, only a very small proportion of his work was held in high esteem, but this changed with the creation of the Purcell Society, dedicated to the publishing of his complete works, in 1876. In more recent times, Sir Michael Tippett has been particularly influential in reviving interest in Purcell's music.
