Peace in the wasteland

Article Abstract:

The New Sudanese Council of Churches has been able to set up peace talks between the Dinka and the Nuer, the two main tribes of southern Sudan. This could be a very significant development in a region where many people have died as a result of famine and war. A whole purpose-built village has been created for those attending the talks, some of whom have had to walk for several days to get there. There could be wide-reaching implications if it proves possible to broker a lasting peace agreement.

Thousands die of want as Sudan spends 1m pounds sterling a day on civil war

Article Abstract:

Conflict between the Arab north and the black Christian south in Sudan has had a very negative impact on the lives of ordinary people. The civil war was the main reason for the famine in 1998, with large numbers of people being displaced but unable to gain access to areas where food was available. The Sudanese government is spending $1 million a day on the war, but the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army continues to hold much of the south.
