Time for Mr Major to choose?

Article Abstract:

The recent speech by former prime minister Lady Thatcher, in which she criticised those seeking to establish a European defence identity, has highlighted the very complex issues involved in European defence policy. It is inevitable that future European defence arrangements will be a compromise, allowing joint action but also giving individual countries the freedom to act independently. If there is strong agreement between the US, Germany, France and the UK, then almost any crisis can be addressed, but little action can be taken if one of these states fails to cooperate.

A region with a bad reputation

Article Abstract:

Western governments are currently unwilling to make a long-term political and economic commitment to the Balkan region. However, this is the only way to secure real peace there, preventing local conflicts from breaking out again. The region has traditionally had a poor reputation, and this has been made worse by the recent Yugoslav war. Many western governments now feel that there will always be instability in the Balkans, and prefer to keep a safe distance.

Why Nato must embrace the East

Article Abstract:

Nato needs to act in a political leadership role rather than its model of a reactive force because it has the task of integration of eastern block countries into the the alliance. Nato ministers meeting in Athens on June 10, 1993, should therefore accept the need for integrated command, shared intelligence capabilities and pooled resources of the EC, Nato, the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe and the Western European Union.
