Too old at 50? Too young to die ...

Article Abstract:

Many people feel that rock and roll stars should give up performing in public when they reach their 50s. This is not the case with jazz or blues artists, who gain new respect as they grow older. However, there are now a number of rock and roll performers who are reaching their 50s, and many are planning to mark the occasion by performing to large audiences, mainly made up of people in their teens and 20s. It is becoming more accepted that rock and roll music is timeless and can appeal to all ages.

Singer's playful sensuality hides the pain of rejection

Article Abstract:

Eartha Kitt was rejected by her mother and beaten by an aunt who brought her up in New York. She relied on food found in the forest in the South Carolina until she was seven. In New York there was not always food. Eartha Kitt auditioned as a dancer with the Katherine Dunham Dance Troupe to escape her aunt's mistreatment. When attending a White House lunch in 1968 she spoke against the Vietnam War and the CIA prevented her from playing in America for 12 years.

Better Mrs B than a bunch of luvvies

Article Abstract:

UK government minister Virginia Bottomley has recently given indications of possible changes in approaches to arts policy-making. For many years, successive governments have kept a considerable distance from the arts, and the allocation of arts funding has been determined by the Arts Council. However, it now seems that the government will be playing a more direct role, although there will still be a long way to go before arts funding is totally just.
