Tory jubilation as victory vindicates strategy

Article Abstract:

The Conservative election campaign had been criticised for lacking direction and for being lackluster but its organisers were claiming the successful outcome vindicated their methods for a tory victory in the U.K. general election. Director of communications Shaun Woodward said the late surge had been planned, the intention being to become much more positive late in the day after having concentrated on the weaknesses of Labour's policies. Party chairman Chris Patten, who lost his seat at Bath, was also one of the masterminds behind the strategy.

Spot the difference

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour and Conservative parties are both very keen to win the middle-ground vote in the run-up to the forthcoming general election. This means that their policies on key issues such as education, employment and health are starting to seem very similar. In contrast, the Liberal Democrats have clearly distinguishable policies on most issues. Politicians have been tempted to blur the truth about some aspects of their policies, and clear political differences of the past have been abandoned.

Major launches his Tory 'revival.'

Article Abstract:

Prime minister John Major hopes to boost support for the Conservative party with a programme which will take the party into a new phase for the 21st century. The programme will emphasise key Conservative values on law and order, low taxation and public service, and will include plans to revive voluntary service in the community and deal with juvenile crime. The prime minister also hopes that it will serve to prevent any attempt to remove him from the party leadership.
