Travel industry seeks to open up last great wilderness

Article Abstract:

Concerns about damage to the delicate ecosystem of Antarctica have until now prevented the development of a tourist industry in the region. However, Australia now plans to convert two of its three research bases in Antarctica into summer bases for tourists. Australia would face strong opposition from Greenpeace if it were to go ahead with this plan, even though it has stressed the need to comply with strict environmental controls. Conflict over environmental protection is likely to be heightened by the fact that Antarctica is believed to have large reserves of coal, iron ore, oil and uranium.

Second patient turns to Dr Death

Article Abstract:

Considerable controversy continues to surround the voluntary euthanasia law which has been introduced in Australia's Northern Territory. Under the law, terminally ill people are allowed to choose to die, and one person has already done so. A second has now announced her intention to kill herself under this law. The Australian parliament has voted to overturn the law, and doctors in the Northern Territory itself have attempted to avoid any involvement with euthanasia.
