UK: BIOTECH INDUSTRY BEGINS TO LAG BEHIND

Article Abstract:

According to research conducted by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), the UK biotech industry is being outpaced by both the US and Europe, in terms of the quality of its science base, and the efficiency of bringing drugs to the market. The ABPI is holding talks with the government, aiming to prevent the transferral of their headquarters overseas by UK drugs companies. It is thought that the UK biotechnology sector, although fast growing, is particularly lagging behind that of Germany. The trend may endanger the UK's chances of attracting more genomics firms, and capitalising on the mapping of the human genome.

UK: GREENPEACE THREATENS GM CROP PLANS

Article Abstract:

Greenpeace has warned the UK government that its genetically modified (GM) crop trials are unlawful. The environmental group claims to be ready to launch a legal challenge to plans for 25 new GM trial sites for winter 2000/01. The Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions has revealed that local councils will have the right to challenge the legality of these farm trials following Greenpeace's warning that the trials may not be legal. Greenpeace has pointed out that permission will have to be granted by local authorities for the trials because the sites involved will no longer be used for agriculture, but for research purposes. The environmental group has also warned that it is prepared to take the issue to the High Court if the government fails to respond. The High Court could freeze these trials and derail the research.
