UK: CONCERN AT PRIMARY SCHOOL LITERACY QUALITY

Article Abstract:

Almost 50% of children are leaving their primary schools without being able to write to the standards expected across the UK, claimed the departing Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) chief inspector, Chris Woodhead. Although the UK government is near to attaining its objectives covering literacy and numeracy, Mr Woodhead believes that greater effort must be made to ensure that writing standards are on a par with the progress made in reading. Mr Woodhead expressed particular concern over the low level of writing standards among 11 year-old boys.

UK: STILL NOT ENOUGH TEACHERS

Article Abstract:

Secondary schools appear to be suffering due to the government's bid to reduce the size of primary school classes. English secondary schools have an average of 17.1 pupils for each teacher, which is the highest figure since 1975. It would be necessary to recruit an extra 5,000 teachers if only to return to the 1997 level of 16.7 to one. Headteachers have warned that by retaining large class numbers, the government will in fact be undermining its pledge to improve key stage three testing of fourteen year-olds.

UK: BONUS PAYMENT AGREED FOR TEACHERS

Article Abstract:

Bonus payments for teachers under the new performance-related pay scheme will finally be paid out by Easter 2001, after the scheme won approval from the School Teachers Review Body. The scheme had been delayed after a High Court found that the government had introduced it unlawfully. Around 200,000 teachers will benefit from the bonuses if they meet targets linked to pupils' results.
