UK: BA TO MAKE COMPULSORY REDUNDANCIES

Article Abstract:

British Airways' new chief executive, Rod Eddington, has warned that there may be compulsory redundancies in order to turn the loss-making airline around. BA is already planning 8,000 job cuts and the withdrawal from many loss-making routes. BA hopes to make cuts through natural wastage and voluntary severance but cannot rule out compulsory redundancies.

UK: 1200 JOBS TO GO AT BA

Article Abstract:

British Airways(BA) is to cut about 1,200 jobs in an effort to make the network profitable again. Capacity will also be cut by 10%, not the 8% widely predicted. Services on 10 routes, mainly departing from Gatwick, will be transferred, reduced or abandoned completely. Those being axed completely include Heathrow to Jersey, Paris Orly, Tehran and Kuala Lumpur and Gatwick to Salzburg and Ljubljana. The airline will also sell four of its Boeing 7547 Jumbos to Virgin Atlantic and will replace them with Boeing 777s operating more often on the most profitable routes. Despite a 9% capacity cut at Heathrow and 15% capacity cut at Gatwick, there will actually be a rise in BA's total flying hours in 2001.
