FINLAND: THOMAS COOK OFFERS NEW PHONE SERVICE

Article Abstract:

The travel company Thomas Cook, has announced a new service, which it plans to launch in Finland in conjunction with Sonera, the Finnish mobile phone operator, which will allow travellers to convert, order and purchase foreign currency through their mobile phones. The system, which the companies plan to expand globally over the next few months, will enable Thomas Cook to distribute money to their customers anywhere in the world.

UK: ORANGE PLANS CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTRE

Orange will open a GB[pound] 15mn customer services centre in August 2001 in North Tyneside. The move by the UK-based mobile phone group, with 8.3mn subscribers, will create 1,500 jobs.

UK: C&N TO BUY THOMAS COOK HOLIDAY UNIT

Article Abstract:

It is thought that the German tour operator, C&N Touristic, is to acquire the holiday business of Thomas Cook. It is understood that C&N is in discussions with Carlson Companies of the US that holds a 22% stake in Thomas Cook and has first option to acquire full control of the UK business. It is thought the sale of the Thomas Cook travel agency business will realise GB[pound] 700mn to GB[pound] 800mn.
