UK: IS GOLDEN WONDER'S FUTURE SECURE?

Article Abstract:

The UK snack market is worth some GB[pound] 2.2bn and is highly competitive. Walkers crisps are said to dominate this market with KP and Golden Wonder in second and third positions, however Golden Wonder's future in this market is looking less secure. The company's most profitable operation is its branded snack products, which include Wotsits, Nik Naks and Wheat Crunchies. Branded crisps are said to only account for 20% of its sales, with a further 30% of sales being made in the production of own-label crisps for big retailers. Despite fierce competition from rival producers the company is keen to launch new products and even consider expansion into continental Europe. Golden Wonder is even to launch a frozen version of its Wotsits snack in August 2000, and has been holding negotiations with a further 20 food manufacturers over other new products.

The bitter taste of sweet success

Article Abstract:

The significant expansion in the number of snack and treat foods available in the UK reflects the emergence of new lifestyle structures in which traditional eating times are being eroded. People seem to want to reward themselves with treats and snacks as the balance between work and leisure time disappears.
