UK: LEGAL RULING HITS BULLETIN BOARD PRIVACY

Article Abstract:

The privacy of online bulletin board users in the UK is under threat following a legal ruling that requires Interactive Investor, which operates a bulletin board for retail investors, to hand over user details to Internet directory company Scoot.com. The details are being sought by Scoot.com to investigate libellous accusations against it that appeared on the bulletin board. Scoot.com is also concerned about leaks of confidential information from the company that it believes may have come from former or current employees. If users' privacy is threatened, many bulletin boards may have to close down at a time when shares in Internet-based companies are already falling.

UK: INTERNET PROVIDERS FACE LIBEL COMPLAINTS

Article Abstract:

An increasing number of complaints are being lodged with Internet service providers (ISP) in the UK from people who have claimed that they have been libelled over the Internet. A recent case found an ISP liable for contents of clients' web pages. ISPs are removing offending web pages and are also calling for changes in the law as freedom of speech and the prosperity of Internet business could be adversely affected if they are to face expensive court action. A number of ISPs have considered transferring their operations overseas to avoid the potential wrangles.
