UK: NARROWING OF NORTH-SOUTH DIVIDE

Article Abstract:

The Confederation of British Industry's (CBI) latest regional trends survey has shown a slight narrowing in the North-South divide. The recovery in manufacturing is said to be spreading across the country with the order books of nine out of the 11 regions increasing during the four weeks over Christmas 1999. The strongest gains are said to have been recorded in the North-West, Yorkshire, Wales and Humberside. However the CBI has warned that this upturn in manufacturing is fragile and that an increase in interest rates could damage the recovery process.
