MI5 'will become second police force as its spying expands.'

Article Abstract:

MI5 is involved in working against drug trafficking, industrial espionage and fraud. The Home Office may create a national police force with MI5 taking on some police operations. The Metropolitan Police are training MI5 in how to give evidence in court. British Telecom engineers who mount taps have increased by 75% since 1980. The Oswestry, Shropshire high-security installation makes computer taps possible. Privy councillors, rather than a select parliamentary committee, analyse MI5's role.

UK: PART-TIME POLICE TO TACKLE RURAL CRIME

Article Abstract:

It is understood that the Government is planning to recruit a part-time police force of retired officers and Specials to tackle the problem of rural crime. It is hoped that the recruitment of 'countryside constables' will help to provide a greater police presence in rural areas and to help man police stations in areas where there have been recent closures. There are also plans to set up police 'surgeries' in local post offices, doctors' clinics and village halls.

How criminals cross the thin blue line

Article Abstract:

A nationally structured police force is necessary to combat international fraud and the rising crime rate. Dr Arthur Goodhart recommended a single national system with hi-tech equipment in 1962. It could be based on the eight regional crime squads. Ultimate accountability rests with parliament but there would also be accountability between the police and individual citizens.
