UK: NAB PREPARES FOR DUAL LISTING IN THE UK

Article Abstract:

National Australia Bank (NAB), owner of the Yorkshire and Clydesdale banks, plus several Irish and US establishments, is considering a restructuring of its business in anticipation of dual listing in the UK. This will necessitate a major UK acquisition in order to give NAB presence in the whole of Britain. Companies that may be suitable are Bradford & Bingley and the Alliance & Leicester. NAB is valued at GB[pound] 15bn, which puts it ahead of Abbey National (at GB[pound] 12.7bn). NAB needs access to a major market, such as London, in order to achieve a competitive rating.

Why NatWest is heading for inevitable shake-up

Article Abstract:

There is persistent speculation about the future of National Westminster Bank, and it seems likely that institutional shareholders will soon demand action. The bank has made a number of serious errors of judgement over recent years, and this raises doubts about whether it will be able to remain independent in the future. However, it will not merge with Barclays Bank, as some observers have speculated. It seems very likely that there will be changes in senior management.

Warning: MPC shouldn't stamp its feet on thin ice

Article Abstract:

The failure by the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to issue an explanation of its decision to raise interest rates has focused attention on the role of the MPC's 'outside' members. The credibility of the Bank of England can withstand signs of polite disagreement between members of the MPC, but may not be able to withstand serious conflict. The flaws in the MPC's design will continue to fuel dissent unless the system is changed.
