UK: HOUSE PRICES IN DECLINE

Article Abstract:

UK house prices are declining by a margin not experienced since September 1995, according to a survey by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. The report, covering 250 surveyors, showed that those experiencing lower prices for August 2000 outstripped the number seeing increases by 8%, with lower prices seen by every region across southern England. Surveyors foresee some stability regarding prices for autumn 2000, the period when sellers and buyers return from their summer break. Of those surveyed, 75% did not envisage any movement in prices over the coming three months, with a fall expected by 17%.

UK: HOUSE-PRICE INFLATION EASES OFF

Article Abstract:

According to UK High Street bank Halifax, the annual rate of house-price inflation reached 7.4%, down from 8% in July and a January 200 high of 16% and its lowest level since June 1999. The August fall was despite a 0.5% rise in house prices between July and August. Whilst industry observers predict house prices will continue to rise, they feel that the rise will be at a slower pace than recently and that the market is stabilising.
