UK: QUALITY OF NHS EQUIPMENT

Article Abstract:

The standard of National Health Service (NHS) disability equipment services, which supply such things as hearing aids, prosthetic limbs and wheelchairs, is unacceptably low, according to a report by the Audit Commission. As a result, thousands of disabled people in the UK are being forced to wait for the equipment, which is often outdated or uncomfortable when it finally arrives. The lack of proper equipment is also costing the NHS millions of pounds in residential care or hospital costs, as many people would be able to live on their own if the service were improved.

UK: OFT TO PROBE BUPA'S CHG ALLIANCE

Article Abstract:

The biggest medical insurance company in the UK, Bupa, is to acquire Community Hospitals Group (CHG) in a deal worth GB[pound] 230mn. However, it is thought that the deal could be investigated by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) over concerns that the deal would see the expanded company control a significant amount of insurance claims and hospitals looking for business. The deal would see the group control 40% of the UK's private medical insurance as well as 25% of private hospitals and beds.
