UK: TV CHANNELS COMPETE FOR FOOTBALL RIGHTS

Article Abstract:

UK digital channel ONdigital has revealed that it has been holding talks with the Premier League for some months over a bid to secure rights to televise Premiership football. The bidding is to begin in March 2000, and it was thought until now that BSkyB and NTL of the US were the only contenders for the deal. ONdigital's entry to the race, possible in alliance with ITV, is expected to increase the cost of the live rights to more than GB[pound] 1bn. If there is a separation between free and pay-per-view games, ONdigital will restrict its interest to pay-per-view. It has recently launched two new channels, Onsports1 and Onsports2, and is soon to launch a pay-per-view service, Onrequest.
