US: GDP GROWTH SLOWED IN FIRST QUARTER 2000

Article Abstract:

US GDP growth for the first three months of 2000 was 5.4%, compared with 7.3% previously, although domestic demand rose from 5.9% at end-1999 to 8%, according to figures released on 27 April 2000. The consumer price deflator rose by 3.2%, the largest increase on over six years and due entirely to the vast trade deficit. Economists responded to the disappointing inflation figures by projecting that the US economy would not enjoy a soft landing. The indications are that the Federal Reserve Board may raise interest rates in May 2000 by 0.5%, the sixth increase in almost a year. Meanwhile, the employment cost index of the US Labor Department increased by 1.4%, the largest rise over a three-month period in 11 years. The figures are regarded as an indication that wage growth is being boosted by the tight employment market.

US: NEW ECONOMY DEVELOPING

Article Abstract:

The absence of any signs of inflation in the US, despite the low level of unemployment, excess in demand versus supply and rising trade deficit, signals the development of a new economic pattern, according to Alan Greenspan, the chairman of the US Federal Reserve. As a result, a different type of monetary policy needs to evolve to ensure economic stability, he believes. Statistics will also need to be calculated differently.
