Under Western eyes

Article Abstract:

Nordic composers are now making a great effort to establish a more international presence, according to Estonian conductor Paavo Jarvi. He left the country as a child in 1980 with his father Neeme Jarvi, also a conductor, but has recently returned there to conduct an Estonian orchestra for the first time. He feels that Estonian musical life has always looked towards the west, a view which is shared by Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tuur. The greater visibility of Estonian music in the west has benefited Tuur, who is now receiving many commissions.

Hard heart, soft stroke

Article Abstract:

Writing percussion music can pose many challenges, according to composer Jonathan Harvey. When planning his solo percussion piece 'Percussion Concerto,' which is to have its world premiere on Jul 26, 1997, he worked closely with Evelyn Glennie, who is to perform the work. He considered which percussion instruments were best suited to her abilities, and decided to place particular emphasis on the marimba. However, he also included other instruments, including a vibraphone and two keyboards from a Balinese gamelan.

Thinking about good vibrations

Article Abstract:

The music of Chinese composer Tan Dun combines western and spiritual elements. He has been very influenced by the music of traditional Chinese ceremonies, and regards music as a total spiritual experience between the audience and the players. He collected peasant songs in his teens, and later became very involved in western music. The resonances in his music are completely natural and very exciting.
