University challenge: let's train the brains and the brawn ...

Article Abstract:

The poor performance of sportsmen and -women in the UK over recent years has led to attention being focused on universities. It is now widely accepted that, since many leading athletes now take degrees, it is vital for university sports facilities to be improved and standards of coaching to be raised. Former athlete Sir Roger Bannister is now seeking 10 million pounds sterling from the National Lottery in order to offer the best possible facilities to aspiring athletes who are also university students.

Buildings with lift-off

Article Abstract:

Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas has won the commission to design a new $25 million campus centre at the Illinois Institute of Technology, which is famous for buildings designed by Mies van der Rohe. Koolhaas has taken a very innovative approach with his design, moving clearly away from architectural convention. His plan includes oases located at the intersections of paths across the campus created by student movement. These oases will house facilities including meeting rooms, shops and offices.

Fields of dreams for mini players

Article Abstract:

Mini-rugby for children is now played at many clubs across the UK. This game, which is played from Sep to Apr, is designed for children aged from five to 12, and the rules vary according to the age of the children playing. Most teams are organized by local rugby clubs, and these clubs are increasingly looking on mini-rugby as a way of nurturing talent for the future. There is not yet a national knock-out competition, but many mini-rugby tournaments are held throughout the season.
