Vere Bird

Article Abstract:

Politician Vere Bird had little formal education, but became a captain in the Salvation Army by the age of 21. He first came to public attention as one of the creators of the Antigua Trades and Labour Union in 1939. He became this union's Pres in 1943, and remained in this position until 1964. He formed the Antigua Labour Party as an adjunct to the union, and became a member of the colonial legislature in 1945. He was first Chief Minister of Antigua in 1961, and became the country's first Premier in 1967.

Muhammad Hadid

Article Abstract:

Politician, economist and industrialist Muhammad Hadid attended the preparatory school attached to the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, before commencing his studies at the London School of Economics in 1928. He returned to Baghdad, Iraq, in 1931, joining the Ministry of Finance. He was also a founding member of the politically progressive Ahali group. He became Vice-President of the National Democratic Party in 1946, and was a leading member of the Council of the Federation of Iraqi Industries.

Lord Robens of Woldingham

Article Abstract:

Politician and industrialist Alfred Robens was Labour MP for Wansbeck, England, between 1945 and 1950 and MP for Blyth, England, between 1950 and 1960. He was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister of Transport between 1945 and 1947, and Minister of Labour and National Service in 1951. He was National Coal Board Chmn from 1961 to 1971, at a time when many pits closed and large numbers of jobs were lost.
