Vision beyond Bloomsbury

Article Abstract:

The net book agreement, which sets a minimum price for books sold in bookshops in the UK, is responsible for the poor performance of the publishing industry, according to Tim Hely Hutchinson, head of publishing concern Hodder Headline. His views have attracted considerable controversy, with book retailers believing that the abolition of the net book agreement would lead to the closure of many rural and specialist bookshops. However, Hutchinson believes that restrictive practices are particularly damaging at a time when the industry is facing competition from new technology.

Does anyone actually like any of this Bloomsbury Group rubbish?

Article Abstract:

Those who present the members of the Bloomsbury Group as having been the pioneers of intellectual life in the UK in the first half of the 20th century are misguided. It can be argued that the novels of Virginia Woolf are actually extremely overrated and that much of what the Bloomsbury Group wrote and said about the Post-Impressionists lacks meaning and perception. The paintings of Duncan Grant are merely imitations, and the fact that his works continue to be exhibited is a reflection of how long-lasting the false values of the Bloomsbury Group have become.

The industry in turmoil

Article Abstract:

The UK publishing industry has become extremely concentrated over recent years, with Penguin, for example, taking over Hamish Hamilton and Michael Joseph. Leading publishers are making redundancies, and commercial, rather than artistic, considerations are dominating strategies. Some people are even expressing the view that editors are no longer necessary, as any capable person can put together a list of writers.
