What role for university?

Article Abstract:

It is vital that broad questions about the role of higher education in the UK are posed as the committee headed by Sir Ron Dearing investigates the funding and quality of higher education. It is also important to consider what kind of education should be made available to students. It is possible to argue that universities have a new role to play in a world which is becoming increasingly uncertain and where everything is contestable. Universities should consider making the handling of ignorance their main role, rather than the discovery and handling of knowledge.

Lessons from Uncle Sam

Article Abstract:

Universities in the US have made significant progress in forging links with businesses, private foundations and charitable institutions. Their experiences offer valuable models for UK universities. It is clear that universities can benefit from creating higher education groupings to help encourage the emergence of a knowledge-driven economy in a specific region. There is also a need for more flexible qualification structures and methods of delivery.

Keeping watch on fascism

Article Abstract:

The National Union of Students (NUS) and the anti-fascist magazine 'Searchlight' have set up Campus Watch, a 24-hour voice bank aimed at monitoring fascist activity at universities and colleges in the UK. It has already attracted many reports of intimidation of left-wing, gay and Jewish student societies. In a number of cases, non-students are responsible for these acts.
