When prejudice reaches fever pitch

Article Abstract:

The very harsh treatment of black, gay footballer Justin Fashanu, who recently committed suicide, highlights the extent to which homosexuality is still regarded as a taboo in football in the UK. It is acceptable for footballers to admire and even love each other for their sporting ability, but football as a whole has still failed to come to terms with homosexuality. Fashanu did not seem to fit in well with gay culture, and was also rejected by black culture because he did not seem to be an appropriate role model.

Futebol - or dancing as it's called in Brazil

Article Abstract:

There are very close links between samba and football in Brazil. Football matches are played amid the sounds of chanting and drumming, and this is captured on the CD 'Samba De Futebol,' compiled by DJ Joe Davis. It will also be recreated at the Batmacumba World Cup Special at the ICA in London, England, on Jun 5, 1998. Performers will include Quilombo do Samba, one of the leading samba schools in London, and DJ Gilles Peterson.

You would like to win. We need to

Article Abstract:

The match between Scotland and England in the Euro 96 football championship is being treated with particular seriousness by the Scots. They regard this match as another episode in the long-running conflict between Scotland and England, and feel that they must win it for the sake of national pride. This sentiment has been boosted by the arrogant way in which the match has been viewed by the British media.
