When pure logic is plain absurd

Article Abstract:

A paradox that could be entirely original is presented. This involves two interior decorators submitting an estimate to renovate an office. They have been told that the estimate must not exceed 10,000 pounds sterling and that the lower of the two will be accepted. If the estimates are identical, then the client will take his business elsewhere. The first decorator attempts to assess the situation rationally, and is forced to conclude that there is no decision procedure that will permit him to maximize the likelihood of successfully submitting a lower estimate than his competitor.

Tintin betrayed!

Article Abstract:

The muted reaction in the UK to the 70th anniversary of the publication of the first Tintin cartoons, drawn by Herge, highlights a general unwillingness to acknowledge the genius of cartoonists. It can be argued that a classic Tintin album contains a great deal more fantasy, humour and narrative style than the vast majority of novels currently being published. Other great cartoonists whose abilities remain largely unrecognized include Winsor McCay, George Herriman and Bob Kane.

In search of the real Tadzio

Article Abstract:

Almost all the events in Thomas Mann's novella 'Death in Venice' actually happened to the author. The beautiful adolescent Tadzio was actually a 10-year-old Polish boy, Wladyslaw Moes. In later life, he came to recognize himself in Mann's character.
