Whiff of cocaine scandal haunts mayor who cleaned up Big Easy

Article Abstract:

Marc Morial, who was re-elected mayor of New Orleans, LA, in Mar 1998, is extremely popular with voters. However, this does not mean that he is immune from allegations that he was once addicted to cocaine. This issue has surfaced again following the arrest of Kevin Smith, a long-time friend, who was charged with purchasing cocaine on a street corner. Morial has responded by dismissing Smith. He has also ordered mandatory drugs tests for himself and all city officials who are his political appointees. He emphasizes that there is no link between the Smith incident and his decision to order drugs tests.

Chrysler Almighty

Article Abstract:

Chrysler, the third-largest vehicle manufacturer in the US, has seen strong recovery over the last four years, with profits now reaching record levels. However, this has not prevented it from becoming the subject of a 20 billion pounds sterling takeover bid from wealthy businessmen Kirk Kerkorian and Lee Iacocca. Some observers are expressing doubts about whether the bid is genuine, but if it is, it would be the second-largest in history.

Jobs boom puts a shine on the old rustbelt

Article Abstract:

The Midwest has been the pioneer, and the main beneficiary, of economic revival in the US. The midwestern states, which until recently were suffering from the decline of traditional industries and the resulting high unemployment rates, are now seeing greater growth than coastal regions. Unemployment has fallen to around 4.7%, lower than the national average, and companies are now suffering from a shortage of workers.
