White knight rides in to Carlton

Article Abstract:

It is widely believed that new Carlton Director of Programmes Steve Hewlett has been appointed in order to save Carlton's reputation for factual programming and to assist in ensuring that its licence is renewed. Carlton has received negative publicity following revelations that two programmes appeared to contain misleading information. Hewlett must now restore Carlton's relations with the Independent Television Commission and revive the company's general reputation.

Article Abstract:

Some BBC television programmes, including 'Teletubbies' and 'Absolutely Fabulous,' have been extremely popular abroad. However, in general BBC television programmes are not particularly successful abroad because they are regarded as too British. Indeed, the UK's trade deficit in television programmes is around 280 million pounds sterling, and the UK holds only around 3% of the world television market, compared with the US at 80%.

How Sky could fall in on ITN

Article Abstract:

Sky is to link with four other broadcasters in an attempt to challenge ITN for the contract to supply news to ITV. A Sky victory would have very negative repercussions for ITN.
