Who will hold the aces when Major shuffles his pack?

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister John Major intends to reshuffle the middle ranks of the cabinet in summer 1993. Chief Secretary to the Treasury Michael Portillo is considered the most likely new leader of the Conservative Party. Some MPs (Members of Parliament) believe that if Major replaced Chancellor Norman Lamont it would make his position risky, but Kenneth Clarke and Sir Norman Fowler, John Macgregor and Michael Howard are possible candidates. Virginia Bottomley, John Patten and Michael Heseltine are expected to remain in their posts.

Major slides backwards into the sleazy mire

Article Abstract:

UK prime minister John Major is attempting to lift the tone of the election campaign by taking a firm line against political corruption. He has written an open letter to all Conservative association chairmen in which he warns that the House of Commons has extensive powers against corruption. This move is believed to be aimed particularly at Conservative MP Neil Hamilton, who may now be expelled from the House of Commons if he continues to refuse to resign following allegations of corruption.

Major faces backbench showdown

Article Abstract:

Some backbench Conservative MPs are expressing increasingly open opposition to a range of policies being pursued by prime minister John Major. They are now threatening to force him to hold an early general election, and one has said that he will resign the Conservative whip if there is not an emergency Commons vote on the single European currency. It is reported that Major is determined to stand firm against threats from Conservative Eurosceptics.
