Why elephants should keep their tusks

Article Abstract:

There is a campaign to lift the international ban on ivory trading. Wildlife specialists in Zimbabwe claim that its elephant numbers have increased so much that a cull is necessary. Africa would then benefit from the sale of the resulting ivory. The Douglas-Hamiltons, a couple of Kenyan-based elephant experts, disagree with this view. They point out that in spite of conservation, poaching and diseases still threaten elephant numbers. Both arguments will be forwarded at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in Japan.
