Why the drug barons are talking green

Article Abstract:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists Glyphosate as a non-toxic herbicide. About 11,000 tonnes are sold annually as Round-Up, Rodeo, Muster, Sting and Spasor. The Agricultural Institute of Columbia recommends it for banana, coffee, sorghum and sugar-cane growing. The opium poppy growing industry produced propaganda alleging that glyphosate caused sterile land, birth defects and contaminated water. Poppy growers damage the environment. Toxic agro-chemicals such as Sevin, which can cause damage to the human nervous system, were discovered in the opium plantations of Huila, Tolima and Cauca, Colombia.

Canada Tories steam into the deep blue water

Article Abstract:

The Canadian Conservative party believes that the best way to rebuild support following its severe defeat in 1993 is to move further to the right. As it prepares for the election which is generally expected to be announced in Apr 1997 for early Jun 1997, it is targeting the right-wing populist Reform party, rather than the ruling Liberal party. Its policies include an immediate 10% cut in personal income taxes, the reduction of civil service employment by 35,000 and the sale of government assets.
