Improved bile-acid thin-layer chromatography to identify feces of neotropical carnivores

Article Abstract:

The similarity in size and shape of carnivore feces makes them difficult to identify, although bile-acid patterns have been used successfully in some species. The recent use of thin-layer chromatography (TLC) to determine bile-acid patterns has produced conflicting results in some cases, suggesting that such a method may need refining. A modified TLC method is used to identify feces of gray foxes and culpeo in southern South America. The method is best used for species that eat small amounts of fiber and which live in dry habitats.

Why we go bananas about ... bananas

Article Abstract:

The BBC's 'Arena' programme is to investigate the history of bananas and their various meanings in different societies. The banana has taken on many different connotations, including madness and masculinity. In the former East Germany, it came to symbolize western affluence, and German artist Thomas Baumgartel has even made the banana into a symbol of democracy. Bananas have considerable socio-political importance, being a key element of entire economies in Latin America.
