Will this be the last hot Christmas for the UK?

Article Abstract:

The UK's economic performance generally seems to be strong as Christmas 1997 approaches. There has been a strong rise in real personal disposable income, prices for consumer goods and many consumer services have stabilized and unemployment is declining. However, this does not necessarily mean that there will be very strong retail sales in the pre-Christmas period. Retail demand is generally reasonably strong, but falling prices are deterring consumers from making quick decisions about purchases. The effect of windfall payments from building society conversions is also beginning to wear off.

Paying foreign investors to build factories here doesn't make sense

Article Abstract:

Some observers are questioning whether the UK government is right to subsidize inward foreign investment. They point out that the economy is producing large numbers of jobs and that taxpayers have to meet the costs of any incentives offered to foreign companies. Most importantly, many foreign concerns are quite willing to invest in the UK without receiving any form of financial backing from the government. It may be more appropriate to remove incentives and settle for a lower level of foreign investment, thus reducing taxes for UK companies.

Online sales will hurt the high street

Article Abstract:

Retailing is beginning to become a less significant way of providing consumers in the UK with their requirements. As consumers become wealthier, they are purchasing services instead of goods. When goods are purchased, they are purchased from new online sources, instead of from traditional stores. Retail sales have weakened, but consumer activity as a whole remains strong, especially in the services sector. There is particular strength in new services, such as computers and mobile telephony.
