Winning back industry to the Tories

Article Abstract:

The UK's business leaders should not take seriously recent statements from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) which imply that their best hopes for the future could lie with the Labour party, rather than the Conservatives, according to Ian Lang, president of the Board of Trade. The Labour party is not really committed to fiscal and economic responsibility, he believes, and business leaders should be careful not to be deceived. He is particularly keen to sever traditional links between employers and the Labour party.

The challenge of bringing Lloyd's back from the brink

Article Abstract:

The rescue of Lloyd's of London is an extremely complicated process, according to chairman David Rowland. He has had to face extensive criticism over recent years, but will probably see a great improvement in his image if he manages to safe the business. Recent research indicates that most members will accept the offer of compensation for the difficulties of the past. Rowland's success has been mainly due to his ability to address changing situations very quickly.

Fraud 'gunslinger' shoots back

Article Abstract:

Fraud could be treated differently in the UK as either the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) or the criminal justice system is considered faulty. The SFO has a poor record in achieving convictions. Justice Turner recommended greater disclosure on paper before the actual trial. The 1992/3 conviction rate was 65-70%. The SFO must not have trials with large groups of people. SFO head George Staple belongs to a group campaigining for formal plea-bargaining.
