Wrong way to stop lies about the Holocaust

Article Abstract:

It is possible to understand by British MP Mike Grapes is currently attempting to introduce a private member's Bill making it a criminal offence to deny the Holocaust. However, it would actually be a mistake to criminalise Holocaust denial. It would be very hard to define denial of the Holocaust, and such a Bill would not be able to take account of the extremely subtle ways in which the Holocaust is sometimes denied. It would only be possible to cover all ways of denying the Holocaust by extremely strict legislation which would be regarded as restricting freedom of speech.

The Holocaust heritage

Article Abstract:

The Nazi Holocaust is not fading into history, even though there are fewer and fewer of its victims remaining alive every year. Indeed, the pace of historical research and writing regarding the Holocaust is accelerating, and the Holocaust has become part of everyday life, rather than being dismissed as a period in history beyond the understanding of ordinary people. Some observers are concerned about the trend towards the politicisation of the Holocaust, as this could hamper the process of embedding the Holocaust in public memory.

Is this a subject just for Jews?

Article Abstract:

There are now 48 higher education establishments in the UK offering Jewish studies courses, and more than 100 undergraduates each year undertake formal degree programmes in Jewish studies. However, there are still some fundamental issues to be resolved relating to Jewish studies. These include the role of Jewish studies in promoting the Jewish identity of young Jews. Some observers believe that Jewish studies should not be promoted on this basis, especially as most Jewish studies students are not Jewish.
