You want brains? We got them...

Article Abstract:

The UK government has cut down on the money it spends on science and technology and the amount it gives universities for the tuition of each student so the universities have turned to seeking work for industry. In 1990 industrial sponsorship had risen to 105 million pounds sterling of the total 763 million pounds sterling university income from research grants and contracts. Imperial College, London has more than doubled the money it gets from industrial research contracts, using an industrial liaison office with over 30 staff. Separate teams in this office concentrate on Japan, Europe and the rest of the world.

Learning at a distance

Article Abstract:

Distance learning courses for MBAs are growing in popularity with the Open University and Henley Management College leading the field for the UK and for exporting courses abroad. Learning whilst working is appealing to managers who usually wish to do the courses to increase their effectiveness rather than for promotion prospects. The Open University course leads the field for individuals and Henley leads in specialised courses for groups or firms. Both MBAs are available to overseas students.

There are 21,000 more postgraduate students in 1993 than in 1992. There is a higher increase in new universities. Oxford and Cambridge universities extended their postgraduate provision to improve their research base. MPhil courses consisting of teaching and independent research are very popular. However, prospective employers tend to ignore higher qualifications unless specifically connected to the work.
