2,3,7,8-Dibenzo-p-dioxins in mine clay products from the United States: evidence for possible natural origin

Article Abstract:

This study was undertaken after the discovery of dioxin contamination in selected chickens. The source of the contamination was identified as the ball clay mined from the Mississippi Empayment in northwestern Mississippi. The ball clay was used as an anti-caking additive in animal feed. Other mined clay products were examined, all of which did not have any detectable concentrations of 2,3,7,8-PCDFs or concentrations 2-3 orders of magnitude less than the PCDDs. The unique features of isomer distribution in the clay suggests their presence is the result of natural geologic processes.

Dioxin assessment revisions unlikely to change conclusions

Article Abstract:

The EPA is altering its documentation on the possible carcinogenic effects of dioxin. The EPA risk assessment team will add more evidence for the revision of its 2000-page, nine-chapter research on the toxicity of dioxin. Furthermore, the research team will provide new data on dioxin's toxic equivalency factors, immunotoxicology and dosage analysis. The five-year review will be presented to the EPA Science Advisory Board in Feb., 1997.

Long-running dioxin reassessment nears SAB review

Article Abstract:

The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) dioxin reassessment near completion and slated for review by the Science Advisory Board (SAB). The new report is expected to highlight the carcinogenicity of the most notorious form of dioxin, 2378-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and provide an update on toxic equivalency factors. The EPA has been criticized for its vague policy on dioxin.
