50 years of solitude
Article Abstract:
Portugal's industrial sector has thrived for many years through good skill levels in key areas and low labour costs. However, with the integration of the former Eastern bloc into Europe, together with increasing globalisation, Portuguese industries are unable to compete on price alone and recognise that they must adapt to survive. One company which has invested time and effort into becoming more competitive is iron foundry Portcast, which exports 98% of its output.

Hot air
Article Abstract:
The Breiting Orbiter 2 hot air balloon broke distance and sub-orbital flight endurance records by becoming the first to carry three men from Switzerland to Burma at the end of Jan 1998. The Orbiter is powered by helium which is heated and expanded by sunlight to provide lift. However, problems arise when the sun sets and solar heating stops. This causes the helium to contract and the balloon to begin sinking.

Managing progress: Keeping hold of staff after an MBA can be a problem for many companies
Article Abstract:
Research by the Association of MBAs shows that graduate skills are often not recognized by employees and 30% of respondents changed jobs within a year of graduation. Companies should ensure that graduates will be able to make use of their new skills and will receive the appropriate reimbursement for those skills. Proper systems are required to identify skills and give MBAs the opportunity to apply them.
