A license for copycats: a court decision may clarify what is patentable while giving a free ride to knockoffs

Article Abstract:

The ruling reached by a court of appeals in Festo v. SMC weakens the laws pertaining to the doctrine of equivalents. The ruling could decrease the value of patents, as infringement cases would be based on amendments to patents rather than the original patent.

In search of better patents: how to get rid of bad filings without costly lawsuits

Article Abstract:

The old business-method of patent has disadvantages, so a new patenting which include areas like genes, software and business method is introduced by the federal courts and the U.S. patent and Trademark Office. The features of the new patent law, which adopts innovative technology by eliminating uncertainties, are discussed.

Bad connections; deleading solder creates worries about electronics reliability

Article Abstract:

Many in the semiconductor industry are worried about the movement to have lead removed from solder. Microchips are soldered to circuit boards, and it it thought that the higher temperature that would be needed with a non-lead composition could damage the components.
